UN: 50 migrants rescued from drowning after boat capsized in Mediterranean Sea
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported that some 50 migrants have been rescued from drowning in the Mediterranean sea after their boat capsized while trying to reach the shores of the European continent.
An independent team providing relief to people crossing the Mediterranean, ABC News reported Saturday, indicated that "about 56 people are in danger" of a boat capsizing.
The independent relief team explained that it had received a phone call from migrants on a boat who had left Libyan shores a few days earlier and said they were in desperate need of help and feared drowning.
Libyan Coast Guard spokesman Ayoub Jassim said the boat capsized off the western city of Misrata, but gave no further details, noting that rescue teams had gone to the scene.
